Geological Hike to Quinten – Discover the "Swiss Riviera"
Glacier-carved cliffs and a Mediterranean microclimate at the foot of the Churfirsten
This guided geological hike leads you along the northern shores of Lake Walen (Walensee), right at the base of the monumental Churfirsten range. Together, we'll discover how ancient glaciers carved the lake's deep basin and why this area enjoys a unique microclimate perfect for figs and grapes. Starting from Walenstadt, we'll traverse rocky paths to reach the picturesque, car-free village of Quinten, before wrapping up the day with a relaxing boat ride across the lake.
Where Glaciers Meet the Mediterranean Climate
The Walensee region is a stunning crossroads of Ice Age erosion and extraordinary climatic conditions. During the hike, we'll reveal how massive sheets of ice sculpted the lakebed, while the towering cliffs of the Churfirsten frame the panoramic views of the Glarus Alps. As we head toward Quinten, you'll experience the "Riviera" character of the region, where steep south-facing slopes and the lake's thermal mass create a sheltered environment unlike any other in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
🐾 Paws on board! Feel free to bring your four-legged friend along; the hike is completely free for them. Just make sure they are confident on rocky terrain, comfortable on a leash, and - most importantly - don't get seasick on deck. Since we'll be taking a boat, please let us know when you sign up if your furry companion is joining the adventure!
